International Holocaust Remembrance Day There is International Holocaust Remembrance Day

There is no doubt that God's hand put me in the path of this beautiful human being. Rena Ferber Finder is one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors from Schindler's List.

On a cool day in Florida several years ago, I sat in her living room and listened with my heart, and my soul has never been the same. Rena courageously shared her story with me, and I became an "eyewitness."

We heal when we remember. We heal when we know. We become who we are meant to be when we stand in the shoes of another.

Thank you, Rena, for your continued love and friendship and for the gift of "knowing".

I honor you on this day!

*excerpt from the book, Put on Your Big-Girl Shoes

"I had witnessed the heavy eyes of a woman as she looked back to a remote place in her memory, reliving the horrors of her past. I would never lose the image of her hand as she rubbed the spot on her arm where an ID tattoo had once existed, from a time when she had been reduced to a number. I had watched her frail elderly hands as she stroked photos of people she loves--people who now live only in her mind."

"Rena, with all her courage and strength, had invited me into her world. She had challenged me to own the responsibility of being an eyewitness--to walk in her shoes and view intolerance through her eyes, to feel the raw pain of terror in her words, to taste the bitterness of indifference, and to hear the silence of hate. I am convinced that when she put her arms around me in the driveway that day, Rena knew the blessing and challenge that she was placing on me. She understood what I could not comprehend at that moment."

"To be an eyewitness would require the courage to stand up to my fears and be fully present--to see, hear and know and then to do what is right. It would take the most difficult and painful kind of courage: moral courage."

Don't make a New Year's Resolution!! Typically, Don't make a New Year's Resolution!!

Typically, resolutions are about goals that require us to give up something or change something that deep down we really love doing--even if it is bad for us.

That's not to say that committing to losing weight, quitting smoking, getting more exercise, etc are not important.

It's to say that resolutions that require deprivation are very hard to keep if they aren't tied to a bigger goal that you can envision.

Let's be honest -- we are all beyond saturated with feeling deprived. The year 2020 has taken so much from so many and continues to leave us longing for connection, energy, and purpose-- not more deprivation.

But the New Year ushers in hope for change. Let's harness that hope to make real and lasting improvements in our lives.

Science is very clear that what we can envision, we can achieve. Our brain becomes rewired to guide us and motivate us towards the things we can envision and believe we can achieve.

Whether you use a vision board, meditation , coaching, or a combination of strategies to help you achieve your desires for 2021, envision it in detail, and achieve it.

Cheers to a healthy and purpose-driven New Year!!

Teaching children how to become an #upstander ! Teaching children how to become an #upstander !

Such a thrill to work with children across the country as they share stories about bullying and standing up for each other. #upstanderkids #upstander #upstanderchallenge

When we teach children to identify their own feelings, we guide them to learn how to identify feelings in others.

This is the roadmap to learning empathy! 👭👩🏿‍🤝‍👨🏼👨🏿‍🤝‍👨🏼

Grateful for the opportunity to teach children about moving from being a bystander to an Upstander !!

Reading to children!!

Covid has challenged us to dig deep to tap into ou Covid has challenged us to dig deep to tap into our resilience .

While there are many ways to cope, research is clear that art and creative activities positively impacts our brain.

The creation of art raises serotonin which improves our mood and shifts our outlook.

Engage the visual right side of your brain and enjoy the positive shift in your ability to cope!

What would Nana say? Shortly after the Cleveland What would Nana say?

Shortly after the Cleveland Indians announced that they would be changing the name, my phone started to blow up with people asking what Nana would say about the change.

I sat for a moment listening to her voice and cobbling together the many baseball conversations that we shared over dinner, in the car, on the couch, or let’s be honest, anywhere that she could slip baseball into the dialog.

In fact, one of the last things that Nana said on her death bed was about “her team.”

❤️⚾️

I imagine that if reporters could ask her today how she feels about the name change of her beloved team, this would be her response.

“The things that make us happy, successful or even entertained will be “ruined” if it comes at the cost of bringing pain to another person.”

Nana loved her team, but not because of the name or the mascot. She loved the crack of the bat, the thrill of the steal, and the heart-pounding excitement of the grand slam. But mostly, she loved her “boys,” the players.

On Nana’s death bed, she reminded us to tell her “boys” she would be watching them from another seat.

Whatever her “boys” will be called in the future, I am confident that Nana will be smiling, knowing that we are “taking care of each other” by using her gift of compassionate empathy.
